DIFFERENT PLACES, DIFFERENT FACES: PRESENTING BHUTAN
CAPTURING THE SOUL OF A DESTINATION
IMAGE AND ARTICLE BY TANIA CHATTERJEE
Local people, their attire and practices are the soul of a place. During a journey, every location generates certain emotions; it is important to understand and feel the emotion of the place and your feelings. My favorite way to capture the emotion of the place is through its people. I like to present the beauty of a destination through its own people. People carry the geographical, cultural and traditional identity of a place.
Taking picture of people seems to be easy and fun but it is also a challenge to visually present a place through its people. Capturing a person’s soul demands a wide set of skills and practice; it demands personal vision and photography style. It requires to push yourself from the comfort zone to get the right image but avoid being too desperate. Build a rapport with your subject, try to learn about them beyond the picture. Capturing the soul of a person is the decisive moment in portrait photography.
